Carole Hayman is a Lifeline customer from Essex who has been with us since April this year. We spoke to her about her personal alarm to get her insight on how the alarm helps her and brings her and her family peace of mind. In our series of Lifeline Customer Stories we take a look into the lives of our customers, find out more about them and how they use their alarm.
What made you decide to get a personal alarm?
Because I’m living on my own and I’m not very steady on my feet, my children worry about me because they don’t live close by so they’ve always been concerned and my partner only passed away last year. That’s what really made me decide to do it and get one. You’ve got to keep your family happy – especially when they’re far away you don’t want them to be worrying about you.
What difference has the alarm made to you?
How long have you got? I don’t think I would be sitting here now answering these questions if I didn’t have it. I’ve been in hospital a lot recently because I had collapsed on the bedroom floor and knocked my back and if I hadn’t have had my alarm on me, I don’t know what would have happened. I can get quite emotional about it. It is the best thing that any elderly person could buy, you don’t have to pay for it outright you can pay it monthly and for goodness sakes what is money compared to your health. Your health comes first and I am so grateful that I have got it.
What would you say to someone considering getting an alarm?
Get it. Just get it. Don’t think twice about it. If it is on your mind then you need to get it. I have told all of my friends who don’t have one that they need to get one. If anyone is thinking about it then it is definitely something they’re worried about – it needs to be sorted. It is so easy to do so PLEASE do it.
Have you ever had to activate your alarm? And if so, how helpful were the Response Team during the call?
Yes – I had to use my alarm. They were so quick, I really couldn’t understand how I was upstairs and the speaker was downstairs how they could hear me but they could! The lady on the other end was brilliant – she told me exactly what to do and that an ambulance was coming and that I wasn’t to move. I can’t fault her in any way at all, I wish I knew her name because I really need to thank her because she was incredible.
How do you feel the alarm helps you in every day life?
It gives me confidence. I’ve got a problem with the stairs because I am not steady on my feet so it is a nightmare. I know that by having this on my arm, it gives me the confidence to do the things that I felt were a problem before I had it. If I could make a speech to everyone in the world I would – the alarm is such a wonderful thing. When you get older, people at my age get unsteady on our feet – our brains are fine but when it comes to actually doing things it can be difficult so I really couldn’t recommend it enough.
