Lifeline: Protecting independence in Canterbury
Here at Lifeline we are always supportive of protecting independence in the elderly for as long as possible. We have been worried this week by reports that sheltered housing services in Canterbury could be under threat.

Sheltered housing services under threat

There have been reports this week from ITV News that some services in sheltered housing could be taken away in Canterbury and Whitstable. Canterbury City Council is consulting whether to continue providing extra services like round-the-clock staff at four different sheltered housing schemes in Kent. Obviously this is concerning for many relatives and users of the current services. The services could be reduced or taken away as a free service at the following places of sheltered housing:
  • Cranmer House, Canterbury
  • Whitgift Court, Canterbury
  • Collard House, Canterbury
  • Lang Court, Whistable

Canterbury Lifeline services

Canterbury City Council has replied to the reports saying that although they are consulting closing some schemes, but do state that,
"If residents require any type of extra care from nursing care to cooked meals, this is assessed by us and referred to social services or to other appropriate agencies to provide. Care packages currently delivered in tenants own homes by external agencies will not be affected by our proposals." - Canterbury City Council
For those who are continuing to live in their own homes at an older age across the country, or in Canterbury, Lifeline offers our personal alarm systems. Our Personal alarms ensure that help is just one click away should you suffer from a fall.
